Are chiropractic adjustments safe?Chiropractic care has been recognized as one of the safest methods of non-invasive, drug-free treatment for musculoskeletal conditions. All healthcare procedures have varying degrees of risk and potential complications that could arise with treatment. Every patient undergoes a thorough physical examination with various tests that are specifically designed to assess and identify any indications that a patient may have adverse effects before they even receive treatment. There are many ways to perform a chiropractic adjustment and your doctor will work with you to ensure the best method is selected for you. Many patients will experience immediate relief after treatment and show improvements in pain intensity, increased ranges of motion and decreased inflammation. Some patients can experience soreness or discomfort following an adjustment and treatment that can feel like soreness from a workout. Research shows that chiropractic is the largest complementary and alternative medicine profession in the United States and is generally safe with very low risk for adverse effects. Neck pain and headaches are some of the most common reasons that patients seek chiropractic care. There is no additional risk shown to receive neck adjustments and chiropractic treatment as compared to seeking traditional medical intervention. There is a small risk of stroke, specifically vertebral artery dissection following cervical adjustments that has been shown to exist in less than 1 in a million patients. Those patients likely had a pre-existing arterial disease. It is extremely important that the patient communicate all medical and health history information to your doctor so that they can select the best forms of treatment for you. The risks and inherent complications of chiropractic adjustments is significantly less than more traditional healthcare options (i.e. over the counter or prescription medications, hospitalizations, opting out of treatment). Doctors of Chiropractic are well equip and trained to provide effective treatments that are safe and recognize risk factors and complications that may require referral to another medical professional for co-management or primary care.
